 Please be sure to read all the directions carefully on any type of fish medications before using it in your home aquarium also try to figure out what your fish has before going out and buying medication to treat them.


  • Did you know Ick is one of the most common type of parasites in the freshwater aquarium hobby that many people encounter. Ick is highly infectious and can infect all species of fish.  Also, the survivors of the infection may become immune but might still carry the parasite without showing any signs of having it.
  • If your fish has Ick you should see little white dots all over the body of the the fish.
  • Causes Stress/or other infected fish
  • Treatment- Ick Guard.


  •  Fungus can cause allot of damage to a fish.  As a matter of fact, any type of fungal disease can do quite a bit of damage to a fish.
  • Causes could be from physical injury/water temperature being to low/a previous bacterial infection or too much stress.
  • What to look for. A white cottony like growth on their body. The areas it can infect are the skin/gills/mouth/fins and eyes.
  • Treatment Melaflex/pimafix but not to be used on species with no scales.  You also can use fungus eliminator.

 Velvet Disease

  • All species can get infected. But some species are more susceptible then others like Goldfish/White Clouds/killifish and paradise fish.
  • Swims around until it finds it's host.  Then attaches itself by either infecting the gills or skin.
  • The way to tell if your fish is infected is the fish will start breathing heavy and start scratching up against things in the aquarium.
  • Treatment velvet block.

 Swim bladder infection

  • This virus only affects the bladder of the fish.
  • The fish lose their balance
  • They lose their sense of co-ordination.
  • The fish lays on it's side at the bottom of the tank.
  • Treatment  their is no known treatment.

Fish Lice 

  • This type of parasite is poisonous to the fish.The poisons that this parasite releases can paralyze or kill your fish.  Also the bites left from fish lice can transfer pathogens causing dropsy and fungal infections.
  • Fish become restless.
  • Their fins become clamped shut.
  • They start rubbing up against the tank and aquarium decorations.
  • Fish lice are visible so they can be seen and removed with tweezers or treated with parasite guard. 

 Fish Tuberculosis

  • This is the most dangerous out of all aquatic diseases and highly infectious. Due to the fact that this disease can survive in the gravel and infect the whole aquarium and quickly kill all the fish in the aquarium. This disease gives very little warning and very few visible signs.
  • fish lose appetite
  • grow thin
  • fish end up having hollow stomachs
  • fish end up having bent or arched backs
  • the fish's color goes pale
  • loss of the eyes
  • fish start swimming erratically
  • skin becomes inflamed
  • This is warning to all those fish lovers out there. If one of your fish has this virus please wear rubber gloves when handling the fish or doing anything with the infected aquarium. Due to the fact that this can be potentially infectious to people.
  • The treatment for this disease is very expensive.  Also the aquarium must be stripped out, cleaned and sterilized very thoroughly.


  • Allot of people in the hobby think that dropsy is a disease by it's self but is actually is one of the more serious signs that come for a bunch of different types of diseases. So here are some of the signs of dropsy below.
  • A swollen body
  • Raised scales witch make the fish take a pine cone look.
  • Red patches on the fish's body.
  • Treatment for this doesn't always work it all depends on when you notice it and how far along it is and how soon the fish gets treatment. Here are a list of medicines that can be used.
  • Aquarium Salt
  • Melafix
  • Sera Cyprinopur
